Butrint, UNESCO World Heritage

What you will actually seeVisiting it well

Fifteen minutes south of Ksamil's beach bars lies one of the Mediterranean's great archaeological sites, and somehow it still feels like a secret. Butrint — ancient Buthrotum — piles twenty-five centuries onto a wooded peninsula in a lagoon: a Greek theatre from the 4th century BC, a Roman forum, a Byzantine baptistery with one of the finest mosaic floors in the Balkans, a Venetian tower, an Ottoman-era castle on the hilltop. UNESCO inscribed it in 1992, and the surrounding national park protects a landscape of channels, eucalyptus and birdlife that makes the visit as much a nature walk as a history lesson.

What you will actually see

The circuit loops the peninsula in roughly two hours at a savouring pace. The Greek theatre, cut into the hillside beside the sacred spring, is the emotional centrepiece; the baptistery's mosaic — usually protected under sand, uncovered only on occasion — and the great basilica speak for the Christian city; the Lion Gate, with its archaic relief, guards the walk up to the acropolis castle, whose small museum and lagoon views close the visit perfectly. Panels are good, but this is a site whose stories — Aeneas's mythical stopover, Caesar's veterans, the Venetian-Ottoman frontier — reward a knowledgeable guide.

Wear proper shoes and bring water: paths are shaded but uneven. The lagoon setting means birdlife everywhere and, in early summer, terrapins along the channel edges.

Visiting it well

Go at opening or after 16:00 in high summer — tour groups from Corfu and Saranda cluster in the late morning. The site pairs naturally with Ksamil (swim after ruins) or with lunch on the Butrint lagoon, whose mussel farms have fed the region since antiquity and still supply the surrounding restaurants. For the full corridor experience, note that many visitors come from Corfu on a day trip via the Saranda ferry: doing it in reverse — staying on the Riviera and taking Butrint at dawn — is emphatically the better way.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Two hours covers the main circuit comfortably; three lets you linger at the theatre, the basilica and the hilltop museum. Add time for lunch by the lagoon.

Yes — the site spans Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman layers, and a good guide (or a private tour arranged in advance) transforms stones into stories. Panels alone undersell it.

Easily — they are 15 minutes apart. The classic day: Butrint at opening, seafood lunch, then Ksamil's beaches and islands for the afternoon.
