Lëkurësi Castle

Saranda's sunset balcony — a 16th-century fortress above the bay
Every evening in summer, a quiet migration happens in Saranda: cars and taxis wind up the hairpins to the hilltop fortress of Lëkurësi, built in the 16th century during the Ottoman consolidation of this coast, to watch the sun drop into the Ionian. The reward is the definitive panorama of the southern Riviera — the whole crescent of Saranda bay below, the Butrint lagoon shining to the south, Ksamil's islets scattered like stepping stones, and across the strait the dark ridge of Corfu, close enough to read the ferry lights. The castle walls now shelter a restaurant and bar, which makes the sunset ritual dangerously easy to extend into dinner.
Arrive 45 minutes before sunset to claim a west-facing spot on the ramparts — in July and August the terrace fills fast, and reserving a dinner table at the castle restaurant is the elegant way to guarantee your position. The light show has two acts: the drop into the sea beside Corfu, then the blue half-hour when Saranda's seafront flickers on below you. Photographers should walk the outer walls for foregrounds of stone against the bay.
The fortress itself is a rough, atmospheric shell — squat towers, thick walls, no museum — and that is fine: Lëkurësi is about the site, not the exhibits. History runs deeper than the view, though; the castle watched over the old village of Lëkurësi and the routes inland long before Saranda below became a resort town.
The natural pairing is sunset on the ramparts followed by dinner — either at the castle itself or back down at one of Saranda's seafront restaurants ten minutes below. If you are staying in Ksamil, Lëkurësi is the reason to come north for an evening; if you are catching the morning ferry to Corfu, it is the perfect farewell to the Albanian shore the night before.
