Palasë Beach
Where the Riviera begins — Caesar's landing, paragliders' runway, the coast's next chapter
Where the Riviera begins — Caesar's landing, paragliders' runway, the coast's next chapter
Descend the Llogara Pass — the serpentine road that drops a kilometre from alpine pine forest to the sea in twenty minutes, the most dramatic arrival on any Mediterranean coast — and the first beach spread out below you is Palasë. It is a statement of an opening: a vast sweep of pale pebbles and open Ionian blue, backed by the Ceraunian mountains, with paragliders spiralling down from the pass on summer afternoons. Local tradition ties the shore to Julius Caesar, said to have landed near here in 48 BC in pursuit of Pompey. Today the invader is gentler: Palasë hosts Green Coast, the flagship resort development that is defining the premium end of the new Albanian Riviera.
Palasë's scale is its luxury — even in August there is room, because the beach runs long and deep and the water reaches swimming depth fast, with that mineral clarity the northern Riviera is known for. Beach clubs and loungers occupy the developed central section near Green Coast; walk north and the pebbles empty out. The mountain backdrop does something rare to the light in late afternoon, when the Ceraunians go pink above the sea.
Do not rush the arrival itself: stop at the Llogara Pass viewpoint before descending. From a kilometre up, Palasë, Dhërmi and the whole run of the Riviera unfold below like a navigation chart — the corridor's single best photograph and the right way to understand the coast's geography before you swim it.
The Green Coast development — villas, residences, a five-star beachfront hotel and a curated strip of restaurants and beach clubs — has made Palasë the reference point for what the premium Albanian Riviera is becoming. For travellers, the practical meaning is simple: this is where the coast's most polished beachfront services now cluster, twenty minutes from the bohemian energy of Dhërmi and Drymades. Watch the paragliders land on the beach at sunset; tandem flights from the pass can be arranged in season for the corridor's most spectacular twenty minutes.
