Porto Palermo · Albanian RivieraTen minutes south of Himarë the coast folds into Porto Palermo, a horseshoe bay so sheltered that navies coveted it for centuries — and in its centre, on a low island tied to the shore by a causeway, stands a triangular stone fortress attributed to Ali Pasha of Tepelena, the ruthless and brilliant Ottoman-era ruler whose court once dazzled and alarmed European visitors. The castle's dark vaulted halls, rooftop battery and 360-degree sea views make it the Albanian Riviera's most atmospheric historic site; the bay around it, dotted with quiet pebble coves, is a destination in itself.
Walk the causeway and buy your ticket at the gate: inside, a corridor of cool, echoing chambers loops beneath massive walls before stairs deliver you onto the roof, where cannon emplacements survey the whole bay. The triangular plan with round corner towers is textbook early-19th-century military architecture, and the interior needs a phone torch in places — part of the charm. Come late afternoon when the stone glows and the tour buses have gone; allow 45 minutes to an hour.
The bay's other history is closer to our time: Porto Palermo served as a submarine base in Albania's communist era, and its huge sea-cave tunnel — visible from the water on the bay's northern arm — is one of the Cold War's strangest leftovers, best appreciated from a boat.

View villas in HimaraPorto Palermo's water is among the calmest and cleanest on the Riviera thanks to the bay's enclosure — the small coves flanking the causeway are perfect for a post-castle swim, and rarely crowded even in August. Boat trips out of Himarë usually combine the bay, the tunnel and the coast toward Gjipe; by land, the castle is an effortless stop on any Saranda–Himarë–Dhërmi itinerary along the SH8.
