Paleokastritsa · CorfuHalfway down the cliff between Paleokastritsa's monastery road and the sea, a painted sign points to a long stone staircase — and at the bottom, wedged into its own rocky cove, sits La Grotta, one of the most distinctive bars in the Ionian. The formula has not changed in decades because it cannot be improved: sun terraces spread over flat rocks, a bar carved against the cliff, deep sapphire water in the cove, and a diving platform from which generations of visitors have launched themselves to applause. It is a beach bar without a beach, and better for it.
Come down mid-morning for the calm version: coffee or a fresh juice on the rocks, snorkelling in water that drops quickly to inky blue, and space to claim a lounging spot before the afternoon swell of people. From lunch onward the energy climbs — music, cocktails, and the steady rhythm of jumpers off the board, from tentative first-timers to local show-offs. Order simply (cold beer, spritz, toasted sandwiches) and settle in; nobody leaves La Grotta quickly.
The jump itself is the rite of passage: several metres into deep, clear water, checked and supervised informally by the bar. If you prefer watching, the terraces are an amphitheatre. Boats and pedalos from Paleokastritsa's beaches also nose into the cove, which is its own entertainment.

View villas in PaleokastritsaLa Grotta is the perfect second act of a Paleokastritsa day: morning at the Theotokos monastery on the headland — icons, sea views, resident cats — then the staircase down to the cove for the swimming hours. The west-coast light means afternoons are golden here; sunset itself drops behind the headland, so take the last cocktail around 18:00 and dine afterwards in one of the bay's tavernas.
