Toula's Taverna, Agni Bay

The Agni ritualThree tavernas, one cove

Agni is a pebble cove on Corfu's northeast coast with no town, no hotel strip and essentially no reason to exist except its three legendary tavernas — and for many regulars, Toula's is the one that justifies the voyage. This family-run institution has been feeding yacht crews, villa guests and day-boaters for decades from its vine-shaded terrace a few metres off the water. One dish built the reputation: prawns Toula, sweet local prawns in a garlicky, faintly spicy sauce served over pilaf rice, a recipe the house guards jealously. Around it orbits everything a great Corfiot seaside kitchen should do — charcoal-grilled fish, slow-cooked island classics, cold Greek whites.

The Agni ritual

The proper way to do Toula's is by sea. Rent a self-drive boat from Kalami, Nissaki or Kassiopi, swim off the anchor in Agni's glass-clear water, then come alongside the taverna's jetty for a long lunch — staff will wave you in. Order the prawns Toula without deliberation, add a whole fish from the ice display, and finish with whatever dessert the family made that morning.

If you come by land, the lane down to Agni is narrow and parking is scarce in August; arrive before 12:30 or after 15:00. Sunset dinners here are quieter and arguably even better — the bay faces the Albanian mountains, and the lights of the corridor come on across the strait.

Three tavernas, one cove

Toula's shares the beach with Nikolas and Taverna Agni, both excellent and each with its own following — locals will argue their merits for hours. It is one of the most charming food rivalries in the Ionian, and the best answer is to stay in the area long enough to try all three. Book ahead everywhere in high season: Agni's fame long ago outgrew its size.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Prawns Toula — the house's garlic-and-spice prawns over pilaf rice. It has been the signature for decades and is the reason many boats detour to Agni Bay.

Yes, Toula's has its own jetty and moorings for customers, and Agni Bay is a standard lunch stop for rental boats and skippered cruises along the northeast coast.

You can't go wrong: Toula's, Nikolas and Taverna Agni are all long-established and beloved. Toula's is the classic choice for seafood and the famous prawns; trying all three over a stay is the connoisseur's answer.
